Express & Impress

We talk about many things like communication & listening skills but one thing is simultaneously running with them i.e. Body Language. This is as important as other things, we all have to understand this as Chairman and CEO of Mandalay, Peter Guberstated,“Language is a more recent technology. Your body language, your eyes, your energy will come through to your audience before you even start speaking.”

Before you utter anything the Listener/ audience see your expressions which come forth as very important impact on them. So, show what has to be shown and also in a manner which never conveys negativity. Deborah Bull said that “Body language is a very powerful tool.

We had body language before we had speech, and apparently, 80% of what you understand in a conversation is read through the body, not the words.”

Major body languages which can be categorized are:

  • Facial expression is essential when we express emotions through the body; the combination of eyes, eyebrows, lips and cheek movements form different moods. One gets all which you hide by not speaking so if you want to hide then also paint that on your face. As the face and the body are normally seen together in their natural proportions and the emotional signals from the face and body are well integrated.
  • People tend to detect un-communicated voice through Body Postures. Research has shown that sitting or standing postures also indicate one’s emotions. A person sitting till the back of person chair, leans forward with person head nodding along with the discussion implies that person is open, relaxed and generally ready to listen. On the other hand, a person who has person legs and arms crossed with the foot kicking slightly imply that person is feeling impatient and emotionally detached from the discussion.
  • Gestures are movements made with body parts (e.g. hands, arms, fingers, head and legs) and they may be voluntary or involuntary. To quote an incident, when I raised my hand as a gesture to call my mom, she easily comprehended that gesture in that crowdy day at Rajiv Chowk Metro Station. American actress and producer Julianna Margulies commented that, “Small gestures can have a big impact.”
  • Handshakes are also a body language used for regular greeting which are commonly used in meeting, offering congratulations or after the completion of an agreement/pacts. They often signify the level of confidence.

Moreover, one should follow the rule of changing the body language according to the place as we can’t be same as we hang with friends and as we work at office.
